 Community of Secuderabad - 1976

On June 21, 1976, Srs Vincent, Cristiana and Cristina left Bombay for Secunderabad to open a new branch. It was the initiative of Fr. Balaguer S.J, that we were invited to the Diocese. Sr. Vincent has this hand account:

"On Ferbruary 1976, Sr. Cristiana and self went to Secunderabad for our mission and to find a place for our stay. Since for a long time we did not find a house we wanted to go back. When we mentioned about it to the Bishop he was displeased. But Sr Perluisa told us to return Then we spoke to Fr. Balaguer. He suggested that we stay on," says \sr. Vincent Padinjaredeth.. "He found a house which belonged to a gentleman who was his acquaintance. Meanwhile we also found a place for the Book Centre. We informed Sr. Pierluisa about the progress.

We returned to Bombay in March and got ready to go back to Secunderabad. We went back in June. This time too we stayed with the St. Anne's Sisters but only for two weeks. Meanwhile we found a house for us. The parlour of the house was used as a clinic by the sisters of Mother Theresa. On June 29 the Bishop in the presence of our friends blessed the house. After a few months Srs. Marie and Cecilia joined the community.

We have the following first person account from Sr. Cristiana, "This would be our seventh house in the Indian Province. We left Bombay with some books, few indispensable items for the house, little money and lots of doubts"

"The Bishop was kept informed of the difficulty in getting a place suitable for a Convent and Media Centre. He showed great concern until one day he decided to offer us the Vacant land the Diocese had at the back of St.Mary's Parish, near the Bishop's house.

"It was indeed a good offer and free of charge, and we gladly accepted it. Soon applied for permission to construct. For this we had a lot of difficulties. But we found great help in two Jesuits, Fr. Balaguer and Fr. Ray. While Fr. Balaguer helped us in all the legal matters and the agreements with the Bishop, Fr. Rey was our spiritual director.

"The house was not yet ready when the Bishop almost ordered us to vacate the cottage, because it had been donated to the Missionaries of Charity. And in one of those days Mother Theresa would arrive to see the house. So we wee compelled to move to the incomplete house.

In 1979, the St. Paul Book and AV Centre were inaugurated in Secunderabad by Archbishop Arulappa.
After a two-week course in Radio and TV, Sr Clare Ukken joined the staff at Amruthavani Communication Centre, as a member of the Editorial Board. At first she stayed at the Fatima Hostel and later in the Community.
We reachout to the whole of Andhra and surrounding places. Besides the dissemination of our productions the community has come out with a Telugu Prayer book and 3 cassettes in Telugu. Besides this we organise programmes during Press Month and Communication Sundays. Lots of animation work is also done from this community.
Annually, we organise a Book and Media Fair at our premises. Enquiry: Pauline Book and Media Centre
