Gospel Confronts Life by John DMello PhD offers a new understanding of spirituality based on the Sunday readings. Whenever I have picked up a commentary on the Sunday gospels, I have found it gives me one of those “spiritualized” and “traditional” interpretations, repeated over and over again, which I find difficult to apply to the communities I am working with. This book by John DMello is different. It offers fresh insights and reflections, relevant to life and pertinent to those involved with communities.
The other interesting thing about his book is that it is a book of stories. Through these stories and illustrations the gospel text jumps out at you and you are urged to make applications for your life as well as for the communities you are dealing with. The themes relate to contemporary life and are wide ranging, and more importantly they emphasize an understanding of spirituality as commitment to the community.
If you are looking to get the maximum from the Sunday readings then Gospel Confronts our Life: Life Challenges Spirituality is the book. Not only priests and those who give Scripture teaching will find it a worthwhile resource book, but any Christian, or anyone for that matter will be inspired and be reinforced to commit oneself to serve the community where one is and find life to be a joyful service to others.
